70 Tonnes of Food Delivered!
Last week we changed up our usual routine,
From Feeding Minds to Feeding Stomachs!
We spent the last week delivering a mind-boggling 70 tonnes of food to local families across Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana, working in partnership with the incredibly generous Pick n Pay Stores and Boxer Nquthu. Having taken part in their Feed The Nation scheme last year, we were offered even more parcels this year - an amazing 2,000 in total.
We are lucky to work with 21 schools, whose principals and staff are sensitive to the needs of the most vulnerable in their community. They helped us to understand which families should receive the supplies. Each parcel contained enough to feed four people for a month, including potatoes, rice, mealie meal, fruit, fish, beans and more - meaning 8,000 people can go sleep with the security that their stomachs will be full for some time to come.
All hands on deck!
When the palettes first arrived at our resource centre with the VERY generous food parcels, there was a moment of panic as we realised the scale of the job! We quickly got on the phone looking to get hold of extra lorries, trailers and cars to help us distribute out to schools.
A huge thank you goes out to the tireless team at Boxer Nquthu, Fugitives' Drift Lodge and all the staff, principals and students who ended the week with aching arms - we couldn't have done it without you.
In normal weeks our focus is on schooling rather than stomachs, but like all things in life these are intertwined. Children arriving hungry find it harder to focus on learning, if there isn't enough food at home it can be tempting to forgo school to work to put food on the table - these challenges are present across all our schools. Pick n Pay's programme offers some food security to those in our community that need it most, and we are honoured and extremely proud to be a part of it.
